L’édition 2020 de la course Daytona 500 a été marquée par un accident spectaculaire au cours duquel le pilote Ryan Newman a été grièvement blessé lors du dernier tour. Heureusement, ses jours ne sont pas en danger.
Ryan Newman menait la course à la sortie du dernier virage. Mais alors qu’il tentait de bloquer le passage à un concurrent, son bolide a dérapé, a heurté un muret extérieur du circuit et a effectué un tonneau avant d’être percuté par une autre voiture.

Le dernier impact a été foudroyant. Certains éléments de la cage de protection du cockpit auraient cédé. L’accident est survenu à environ 300 km/h.

«Sa vie n’est pas en danger»
Les secouristes sont intervenus rapidement et le pilote a été transporté par ambulance au centre médical Halifax de Daytona Beach, où les médecins ont dressé un premier bilan de santé plutôt rassurant.
«Son état est sérieux, mais sa vie n’est pas en danger», ont-ils fait savoir.
Ryan Newman participe à la Coupe NASCAR depuis 1993. En 2008, il a remporté le Daytona 500.
